Prime Minister Narendra Modi has issued a strong response to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to raise tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent. Speaking at the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference in New Delhi, Modi made it clear that India’s farmers are not up for negotiation.
“India stands by its people. We will not compromise on the livelihood and dignity of our farmers,” the Prime Minister said. “We’ve walked a long road to food security and farmer empowerment. No global decision will shake our resolve.”
Trump recently signed an executive order imposing an additional 25 percent tariff on Indian imports on top of a 25 percent hike earlier this year, citing India’s oil trade with Russia as the reason. The move has sparked tension in bilateral trade relations and triggered concerns in India’s export and farming sectors.

Modi’s remarks came during the inauguration of the M.S. Swaminathan Centenary International Conference, held to mark the 100th birth anniversary of the agricultural scientist widely regarded as the father of India’s Green Revolution. The event paid tribute to Swaminathan’s pioneering work in sustainable agriculture and global food security.
During the ceremony, Modi released a commemorative coin and postal stamp in Swaminathan’s honor. He also presented a special international award focused on food and peace, underlining India’s continued commitment to fighting hunger and protecting farmers worldwide.

“Swaminathan Ji taught us that science must serve humanity,” Modi said. “His legacy reminds us that agriculture is not just the backbone of India’s economy, it is the soul of our nation.”
With rising global tensions and shifting trade dynamics, India is now expected to review the impact of the new U.S. tariffs. Sources say New Delhi is weighing diplomatic and economic responses, including the possibility of countermeasures.
